Summary
Nestle’s Operations in the West Bank
Nestle has operated in the West Bank since 1995 when it acquired a 10% stake in Osem Investments, an Israeli food manufacturer. Osem has a factory in the West Bank settlement of Ariel, which is considered illegal under international law. Nestle has also been accused of using water resources in the West Bank, which are controlled by Israel, to produce its products.
Nestle’s Treatment of Palestinian Workers
Nestle has been criticized for its treatment of Palestinian workers in the West Bank. The company has been accused of paying Palestinian workers less than Israeli workers and of subjecting them to poor working conditions. In 2016, the company was sued by a group of Palestinian workers who claimed that they had been subjected to “systematic discrimination” by the company.
Nestle’s Response
In 1995, Nestle purchased 10% of Osem and then acquired a controlling stake of 51% by 1997. Nestle bought out Osem Investments Ltd. for over $840 million in 2016. All these acquisitions happened despite Osem operating in the occupied West Bank. Now, Nestle is directly and actively complicit and actively profiting from the occupation of the West Bank. This is unacceptable, unethical, and illegal.
Nestle’s Unethical Practices
Unfortunately, these unethical practices are not a new phenomenon for Nestle. Nestle has been involved in several controversies over the years. Here are some of the most significant ones:
- Water Exploitation: Nestle has been accused of using water resources in the West Bank, controlled by Israel, to produce its products. The company has also been accused of taking clean drinking water in other areas, even in places in Canada, that sorely need it.
- Environmental Impact: Nestle has been criticized for its environmental impact. The company has been accused of contributing to climate change and deforestation, among other things.
- Child Exploitation: Nestle has been accused of using child labour and faced a child slavery lawsuit in the US.
- Baby Formula Scandal: Nestle has been accused of convincing people that its baby formula is better for infants than breast milk, which is categorically false. The company marketed its formula in developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia during the 1970s, sending saleswomen dressed as nurses to convince mothers that their formula was better for their children than their own breast milk. Many women, struggling to afford the expensive milk touted as better than what their bodies produced for free, diluted the formula with (often unsanitary) water, further reducing its nutritional value. Millions of infants died, and many more grew up nutritionally deficient, dramatically impacting the health and lifespan of swathes of the developing world.
